The official language of the Falkland Islands is English, but Falkland Islands English, Tagalog and Shona are also spoken.
Vehicles drive on the left-hand side in the Falklands. The minimum age to drive is 17, but it is between 21 and 25 to rent, depending on the provider. Most rental companies require drivers to have held a clean, valid driving licence for at least 2 or 3 years. UK drivers don't need an International Driving Permit (IDP) since a valid UK photocard licence can be used for up to 12 months.
A large portion of the islands' road network consists of unsealed, unsurfaced gravel and rock paths, not to mention sudden sharp corners, high winds and changing road cambers. It is advised to be extra cautious on the road than usual, and to drive well below the limit to maintain vehicle control and avoid skidding or loose stones. A 4×4 is strongly recommended to travel across East Falkland. However, cross-country off-roading is strictly prohibited, and rentals cannot be taken from the eastern island to the western island. Make sure to check the rental company's terms if you're visiting remote wildlife sites. Additionally, there is no general vehicle-recovery service on the islands, so having the ability to change a tyre is essential. Fortunately, rental companies do advise drivers on what to do if they get into trouble.
Diesel, unleaded petrol and leaded petrol are sold in Falklander fuel stations, but diesel is the most common due to modern 4x4 hire vehicles. Stations are self-service, with the Stanley Services stations having a convenience store to pay instead of automated pumps. Card is acceptable, but varies across the islands. It is recommended to carry cash where possible. Stanley Services also has an ATM machine available, but only during business hours (8am – 6pm on weekdays, 9am – 6pm on Saturdays, and 9am – 5pm on Sundays/public holidays).
There are only two known petrol stations in the Falklands; Stanley Services and the Fox Bay Fuel Station — which is open 24 hours a day. As Stanley is the main place to refuel, make sure to fill in Stanley before departure since fuel availability outside the city is much more limited. Your rental company should tell you where fuel can be obtained at your particular destination, but you can ask the company whether they provide an approved emergency fuel container and whether they can permit customers to carry one. Fuel transport has safety/regulatory considerations, and the need will depend heavily on your itinerary.
